After viewing the film, Guatemala: The Human Price of Coffee, discuss the impacts of globalization on the coffee farmers in Guatemala. How does buying a cup of coffee at Starbuck’s effect coffee farmers in Guatemala? How does this relate to globalization? Would what you saw in the video, and what you read in the book, change your consumption patterns?

Focus of the Final Research Paper

Throughout this course, we have learned that culture is a powerful tool that allows humans to adapt to their own unique environments. In order to better understand cultural diversity, comparisons between cultures are often used to explain the similarities and differences across societies. In order to demonstrate your understanding of the adaptive nature of culture, you will prepare a research paper that requires you to think about what people are doing, why they are doing what they do, and how it ties in with their environment.

In this paper you will be comparing and contrasting one of the following topics in three cultures (other than your own), providing an analysis of the similarities and differences, and an explanation of why these differences might exist.

In your rough draft you selected a topic from the following list:

Body Art and Ornamentation

Child Rearing Practices

Healthcare practices

The use of music or dance as a form of political protest/music or dance as a reflection of cultural issues, values and beliefs

Educational practices

Elderly care

Body Language and Proxemics

Rites of Passage

Conflict resolution

Marriage practices

Alternative gender roles

Alternative topics are possible, but must be approved by the instructor at least a week before the Week

Three draft is due.

In Week Three, you conducted your research and completed a Rough Draft of the Final Research Paper. You have

also received feedback from your instructor on this draft. It is important at this stage that you carefully take the time to review the feedback that was provided. If based on this feedback, you feel the need to conduct any additional research, now is the time to visit the Ashford University Library and find additional sources.

Expand your rough draft into a seven to eight page research paper that contains the following components:

a. A discussion of how three cultures (other than your own) approach the topic, including specific

ethnographic examples.

A compare and contrast analysis of the similarities and differences in how the three cultures approach the topic, from a culturally relativistic perspective.

An explanation of why these differences or similarities might exist.

Take extra care as you are writing this paper to ensure that you have given proper consideration to all of the notes that were provided to you by your instructor. You will also want to allow plenty of time to proof-read the Final Research Paper and double check for formatting and the use of proper citations. If you are concerned about plagiarism, please utilize the Plagiarism Flow Chart, found in your online course.

The paper must be seven to eight pages in length and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least three scholarly sources from the Ashford University Library to support your claims. Cite your sources within the text of your paper and on the reference page. For information regarding APA, including samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, located within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar, in your online course.

REFLECTIVE PAPER

Ant101:  Cultural Anthropology

October 20, 2013

Abstract

A Reflective Paper, by its very definition, requires an introspective look both forward and rearward. In other words, reflection is a way to dissect, and perhaps, categorize the educational system that I have known, while each element is to increase the effectiveness and contribution of the educational system.   Therefore, is on aspect more important than the other. This paper attempts to synthesize my knowledge and experiences and my theoretical studies into a readable, meaningful document.

Public School System

As this Research Paper, like any other, must adhere to established protocols of research among others, I decided to anthropologically look at how we in this country are in competition with ourselves in the way that our educational system works. I will then compare and contrast how our system currently works as opposed to how it can and should work for the benefit of the children we serve in our public school systems. In other words I intend to self-evaluate the learning process of an educational system that though much maligned, has served this nation well throughout history.
Our current system is based on Normative Values, which is to say that we have a punishment based school system in America. This system attempts to “build” a student by focusing on her/his weaknesses instead of his strengths. For example, we don’t generally tell the child how many he/she got correct on an exam we tell them how many they got wrong on the exam. We don’t even generally tell them how the body of their work was fundamentally sound…. we just say, “You got this one right and this one wrong”. Dr. Phillip C. Schlechty, founder of the Center for Leadership in School Reform, says our schools should be designed to be “learning organizations” but our cultural and historical perspective doesn’t allow us to think that way in our public schools even though that is the methodology of learning embraced by none other than the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).   Again, my goal here is to show the cultural clash that is being waged within our own educational system as it currently exists and the way some education reformers would like to see it go. Make no mistake; this is a battle of epic proportions.

Systems within System
Let’s begin our study of contrasting systems within a system at the beginning. In America we have for years seen the “true” genesis of academia to be kindergarten.   I know that there has been pre-school of some form or another for years, but it has yet to be fully recognized for it’s value, and it is mainly viewed as an educational “nice-to-have” as opposed to the “need-to-have” it has proven itself to be. I am not attempting to minimize the importance and value of kindergarten. On the contrary, I believe that we tend to get it right in kindergarten, because it is built on the premise of giving children intrinsic motivation to show them that their good deeds are recognized. Hence they get a gold sticker and the teacher smiles at them! My only point is that we need to embrace pre-school as a necessary augmented to help the children who will be entering kindergarten a year later. Instead, pre-kindergarten (pre-k) is viewed as some sort of luxury that districts cannot afford. Education reformers would say that we couldn’t afford not to have it input districts. Again, fundamental differences based on a cultural divide. This divide is not base on race or religion or ethnicity or gender. It is based on cultural mores about education and those who say let’s be daring and adventurous and try something new and different.
Our European based educational system simply can be improved upon. I am not one of those who believe that it is an unequivocal and dismal failure. I do believe, however, that the thinking that has gone into our system is a failure. The American public education system has not survived, because of these so-called “thinkers”, but in spite of them. So I see the battle as being between the Traditionalists and the Reformers.

ACC 206 Week 5 Final Paper

ACC 206 Week 5 Final Paper in $5 Only

Focus of the Final Paper

You’ve just been hired by ABC Company as the corporate controller. ABC Company is a manufacturing firm that specializes in making cedar roofing and siding shingles. The company currently has annual sales of around $1.2 million, a 25% increase from the previous year. The company has an aggressive growth target of reaching $3 million annual sales within the next three years. The CEO has been trying to find additional products that can leverage the current ABC employee skillset as well as the manufacturing facilities.

As the controller of ABC Company, the CEO has come to you with a new opportunity that he’s been working on. The CEO would like to use the some of the shingle scrap materials to build cedar dollhouses. While this new product line would add additional raw materials and be more time intensive to manufacture than the cedar shingles, this new product line will be able to leverage ABC’s existing manufacturing facilities as well as the current staff. Although this product line will require added expenses, it will provide additional revenue and gross profit to help reach the growth targets. The CEO is relying on you to help decide how this project can be afforded. Provide details about the estimated product costs, what is needed to break even on the project, and what level of return this product is expected to provide.

In order to help out the CEO, you need to prepare a six- to eight-page report, with at least three, but no more than five scholarly sources, that will contain the following information (including exhibits, but excluding your references and title page). Refer to the accompanying Excel spreadsheet (available through your online course) for some specific cost and profit information to complete the calculations.

I.                    An overall risk profile of the company based on current economic and industry issues that it may be facing
II.                 Current company cash flow
a.       You need to complete a cash flow statement for the company using the direct method.
b.      Once you’ve completed the cash flow statement, answer the following questions:
i.       What does this statement of cash flow tell you about the sources and uses of the company funds?
ii.     Is there anything ABC Company can do to improve the cash flow? iii.Can this project be financed with current cash flow from the company? Why or why not?
iv.If the company needs additional financing beyond what ABC Company can provide internally (either now or sometime throughout the life of the project), how would you suggest the company obtain the additional financing, equity, or corporate debt, and why?

III.               Product cost: ABC Company believes that it has an additional 5,000 machine hours available in the current facility before it would need to expand. ABC Company uses machine hours to allocate the fixed factory overhead, and units sold to allocate the fixed sales expenses. Based on current research, ABC Company expects that it will take twice as long to produce the expansion product as it currently takes to produce its existing product.
a.       What is the product cost for the expansion product under absorption and variable costing?
b.      Assuming ABC Company wants a 40% gross margin for the new product, what selling price should it set for the expansion product?
c.       Assuming the same sales mix of these two products, what are the contribution margins and break-even points by product?
IV.              Potential investments to accelerate profit: ABC company has the option to purchase additional equipment that will cost about $42,000, and this new equipment will produce the following savings in factory overhead costs over the next five years:
Year 1, $15,000

Year 2, $13,000

Year 3, $10,000

Year 4, $10,000

Year 5, $6,000

ABC Company uses the net-present-value method to analyze investments and desires a minimum rate of return of 12% on the equipment.

a.       What is the net present value of the proposed investment (ignore income taxes and depreciation)?
b.      Assuming a 5-year, straight-line depreciation, how will this impact the factory’s fixed costs for each of the 5 years (and the implied product costs)? What about cash flow?
c.       Considering the cash flow impact of the equipment as well as the time-value of money, would you recommend that ABC Company purchases the equipment? Why or why not?  V.            Conclusion:
a.       What are the major risk factors that you see in this project?
b.      As the controller and a management accountant, what is your responsibility to this project?
c.       What do you recommend the CEO do?
Writing the Final Paper
